What is Publishing?

To publish is simply to “make public.” Publishing captures intellectual properties (such as the written and spoken word, music, movies, and stage plays), bottles them in portable and durable forms (like a book, DVD, or MP3) and distributes them to those who want them.

Any historical review of publishing would show ancient scribes writing on animal skins; monks toiling away in endless obscurity, producing multiple volumes by hand; Gutenberg’s printing press; Edison’s phonograph; iPods; e-books, etc.

Historically, books were published to be read. But, over time, free-market capitalism became the steering wheel for publishing. Large publishing empires – like Random House, Simon & Schuster, RCA Records, Life Magazine, MGM – formed around that mega-venture of connecting published products with markets.

Inevitably that market model began to demand greater profits for the publishers. With Wall Street’s increasing influence, the publishers had to invest more energy into protecting investors and market share. Consequently, their tolerance for risk diminished. The book publishers began demanding “sure fire winners” – John Grisham, Harry Potter, celebrity-products, proven series (“Chicken Soup…”) etc.

Now, the economic factors have virtually locked the door to the new voices (those without a publishing track record). Today, books are published to be sold.

However…good news! The river of publishing quality and content flows on. Cool River Pub, Inc. is helping new voices to build quality products and find their audience.

How Does Cool River Pub Work?

The Cool River pattern features electronic, audio and small runs of high-quality paper books. We deliver first-class covers, interior design, layout, and printing.

With new technology, that is far more effective, manageable, and economical for most writers, especially new voices.
Cool River Pub is a “partner publisher.” That means we will (in many cases) share the costs and profits.

For example, let’s say that you want to publish 1000 copies of a high-quality paper book. And, the total cost of the package – including professionally designed cover and interior, layout, printing, ISBN numbers, etc. – is $7,800. If an author wants all the profit, we will deliver the whole package for $7,800.00. But, maybe an author would like Cool River to be an investor. In many cases, we can provide 10, 20, 30, or even 40% of the cost. And, naturally, we will receive the same percentage of the profit.

That pattern gives writers more freedom and power in the new publishing era.
